GHMC to be split into Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Malkajgiri corporations; each with its own Mayor, Commissioner
Hyderabad: Greater Hyderabad will have three Mayors and three Municipal Commissioners, once the mega municipal elections are completed.
The big daddy, i.e. the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), will now be divided into Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Malkajgiri. Each of the corporations will have its own Mayor and its own Commissioner (an IAS officer), said a highly placed source.
How will the new organisation of administration look like?
Each corporation, i.e. Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Malkajgiri, will be further divided into zones and circles, which will be headed by officials at the Additional Commissioner and Zonal Commissioner levels.
Each corporation will have its engineering, health, urban biodiversity, electrical, town planning, and fire safety wings and the rest of the department will be involved in urban planning. Each corporation will function independently and the commissioners will report to the Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD).
After Bengaluru, Hyderabad will be among the big cities in India to have multiple and the biggest corporations (according to the size of jurisdiction). The area in and around Outer Ring Road (ORR) will come under the new municipal commissioners.
GHMC elections to take time to accommodate re-organisation
The GHMC elections are one of the most important in the state. They will take time as the reorganisation of the various jurisdictions is still in process. The Telangana State Election Commission (SEC) will first issue the notification for the other local body elections and GHMC will follow later.
However, the current municipal body under Mayor Vijayalaxmi Gadwa will complete its term on February 10, 2026. It is yet to be decided if the current body will be dissolved and the corporation will continue functioning under the GHMC commissioner as de facto.
The importance of GHMC elections
The GHMC elections are extremely crucial for the Congress Government-led by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy. The election results will prove who has the hold over Hyderabad.
Currently, the primary opposition is BRS, which has the maximum MLAs from the city, followed by AIMIM. The Congress currently has two MLAs, Secunderabad Cantonment and the newly elected Jubilee Hills MLA V Naveen Yadav.
It is important to note that the BJP party bagged 45 corporator seats last term and holds a considerable vote percentage in the city limits. The GHMC elections will witness a lot of big sops and mega promises to the city residents from all parties.
Reservations for municipal elections
The Telangana government on Saturday finalised the reservation pattern for Mayors of Municipal Corporations and Chairpersons of Municipalities across the State, with 50 per cent of the posts reserved for women.
Announcing the details at a media conference, Municipal Administration Department Director Sridevi said reservations have been allotted for 10 Municipal Corporations and 121 Municipalities, in accordance with constitutional and statutory provisions.

Once the government issues the formal Government Order (GO), the SEC is expected to announce the municipal election schedule within one or two days.
Political significance
The reservation pattern is expected to play a crucial role in shaping political strategies ahead of the local body polls, especially with a strong emphasis on women’s participation and representation across urban local bodies in Telangana.
Merger of municipalities completed
The merger of 30 municipalities and seven corporations in the GHMC peripheral area has been officially completed, with the Municipal Administration Department issuing Government Order (GO) No. 264.
Eight zonal commissioners have already been appointed, and two IAS officers have been exclusively assigned to oversee Hyderabad’s administration.
