Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is set to rope in reputed academic and research institutions for third-party inspections to tighten quality control over its infrastructure projects.
Tenders have been issued inviting universities, Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and R&D organisations to take up quality audits of civil engineering works across the city.
Projects under the scanner
Every year, GHMC executes engineering works worth hundreds of crores, including flyovers, underpasses, Road Over Bridges (ROBs), Road Under Bridges (RUBs) and nala improvement works under the Strategic Nala Development Programme (SNDP).
Housing construction and various other civic infrastructure works also come under its ambit.
12 agencies to cover 30 circles
Officials said the tenders cover both civil and SNDP works, excluding projects under the Comprehensive Road Maintenance Programme (CRMP).
The third-party inspections will apply to all works costing more than Rs 5 lakh. The contract period will be two years, with GHMC planning to appoint 12 agencies to oversee projects in its 30 circles.
Which urban features will be inspected?
The selected agencies will be responsible for verifying the quality of cement concrete pavements, bituminous (BT) roads, underground drainage systems, stormwater drains, RCC buildings, culverts, bridges, footpaths and other civic works.
Inspections will involve field visits as well as laboratory testing, with detailed reports to be submitted to GHMC to prevent substandard execution.
Strict eligibility norms
Institutions wishing to participate must have been established at least 10 years ago, possess AICTE recognition, and meet other prescribed technical qualifications.
Focus on SNDP phases
According to officials, inspections will also be mandated for incomplete works from the first phase of SNDP and for upcoming works under the second phase, ensuring that quality standards are upheld throughout.
