Hyderabad: In a disturbing incident, private dog catchers were illegally hired to remove stray dogs roaming inside Golden Leaves Villa, Nagole, in Hyderabad.
The matter came to light on Wednesday, September 17, after the Stray Animal Foundation of India (SAFI) shared pictures on Instagram showing dogs cruelly restrained.
Dogs cruelly restrained
Their snouts were tied tightly, leaving them unable to breathe, while one pregnant dog was seen bleeding from the mouth.
“When our team approached the police station to file an FIR, the Golden Leaves Villa Association secretary tried to pressure us into withdrawing the complaint. But we refused to yield and stood firm. Finally, an FIR was registered against the catchers, not the villa secretary. Later, the secretary claimed the dogs were released, but they were not,” said SAFI Cruelty Prevention Manager A Gowtham, speaking to NewsMeter.
“We have appealed to the Inspector to file a case against the villa secretary, and we will not rest until justice is served. So far, the dogs’ whereabouts remain unknown. This action is a blatant violation of the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules, 2023, and falls under Section 11(1)(a) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960,” Gowtham added.
As per SAFI, this act clearly breaches Indian animal welfare laws, such as:
- The Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules, 2023.
- The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
- Street dogs cannot be harmed or relocated. Such acts are illegal and punishable.
