Goodbye 2021: Drunken driving cases up by 194% in Greater Hyderabad, Rs 17 Cr fine imposed

Hyderabad: All the three commissionerate in Greater Hyderabad have witnessed a 194 percent increase in drunken driving cases in 2021. A total of 68,320 drunken driving cases have been booked in Cyberabad, Hyderabad, and Rachakonda commissionerates this year.

Around Rs 17,03,85,677 fine has been collected by the court in three commissionerates. The highest fine of Rs 10,49,61,000 was collected by Hyderabad commissionerate. Cyberabad commissionerate collected Rs 4,51,51,790 and Rachakonda commissionerate.Rs 2,02,72,887.

In 2020, only 23,184 drunken driving cases were booked. Out of 68,320 cases, the highest has been booked in Cyberabad (34,746) followed by Hyderabad city (25453) and Rachakonda (8,121) in 2021.

Out of the total drunken driving cases, the driving licenses of 255 accused have either been suspended or canceled.

All those found involved in DD have been booked under section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. A penalty of Rs. 10000 or imprisonment up to 6 months is for the first offense. There is a penalty of Rs. 15000 or imprisonment up to 2 years for the second or subsequent offense.

Also, all their driving licenses will be seized and sent to the concerned RTOs for suspension as per section 19 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

Police said for the first offense, the driving license (DL) will be suspended for 3 months. For the second and subsequent offenses, the DL will be revoked permanently making the person ineligible to drive in India.

The highest number of licenses were suspended in the Cyberabad commissionerate (215) followed by 25 in Hyderabad City and 15 in the Rachakonda commissionerate.

A total of 4,576 people were sent to jail in drunken driving cases. The highest number of 3790 people were sent to jail in Cyberabad Commissionrate. Likewise, 580 people were sent to jail in Rachakonda and 206 in the Hyderabad commissionerate.

A total of 1592 fatal road accidents were reported in three commissionerates. The highest 712 fatal accidents were reported in Cyberabad, 602 in Rachakonda, and 278 in Hyderabad city this year.
