Hyderabad: Telangana Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development KT Rama Rao on Tuesday said the government will come up with a law for the development and expansion of nalas and lakes in the city.

During a review meeting, Rao said to prevent inundations in the city, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials have come up with a comprehensive program for the development of nalas. He said there was a need to strengthen the age-old nalas and sewer system, keeping in mind the rapid urbanization.

He said the Telangana government is coming up with a comprehensive nala development program. The minister stated that Hyderabad has been recording heavy to very heavy rains in recent times.

"To avoid a flood-like situation in the city, the government is taking up nala development and expansion works. The government wants to take up these works in a well-planned manner to ensure no citizen goes through any kind of inconvenience in the future," said KTR.

He said the government will take care of the poor who will get affected by the nala expansion programme. He said that the government is also considering the allocation of 2 BHK dignity houses to those affected based on their eligibility.

The zonal commissioners of GHMC submitted a detailed report to the minister on the works taken up. These include clearing bottlenecks, expansion, and construction of retaining walls.

The minister directed the officials to take up all these works along with the Strategic Nala Development Program. He asked the officials to identify bottlenecks and clear them on a war footing.

The minister also stated that a meeting will be called for with all the MLAs from GHMC limits soon. Special Chief Secretary Arvind Kumar, Mayor Gadwal Vijaya Lakshmi, Deputy Mayor Latha Mothe, GHMC Commissioner Lokesh Kumar, and senior officials participated in the meeting.
