Ground Report: Hyderabad: How dog organs were removed at Chengicherla ABC Clinic

Hyderabad: When Jaideep Kumar, Radha Kumari, and Anuradha visited Chengicherla Animal Birth Control (ABC) Clinic, they were shell-shocked to see tubs full of organs harvested from the dogs.

"As animal rights activists, we received numerous complaints and tips about the Boduppal ABC center. Dr. Karnati Srinivas heads the NGO and runs it under the jurisdiction of the Boduppal municipality," said Jaideep Kumar. The visit blew the lid off one of the worst animal rights abuses in the state. The trio found hundreds of dogs have died of "unknown causes". There were insects in dog food dispensers; and stinking kennels with mounds of feces, urine, and contaminated food.

Located in Chengicharla, which is around 10 km from ECIL, Animal Birth Control Clinic falls under the Medipally Mandal of the Medchal-Malkajgiri district in Telangana.

According to the findings, many street canines were lodged in deplorable, unsanitary conditions. The majority of the dogs appeared to be unwell and in critical condition. The dogs were housed in separate rooms and restrooms that were filthy with blood, urine, stale food, and feces.

In several of the kennels, flies, beetles, and ants were discovered on self-feeders. According to the inspection records, at least a dozen canines exhibited issues such as eye disorders, severe dental disease, and irritated paws.

The dogs were kept in multiple bedrooms of a duplex house. The rooms were unclean and unhygienic and had no facilities like fans or proper ventilation and large iron rods were found that are used to beat the dogs.On the first floor of the house was the operation theatre. It was in horrible condition with dust and cobwebs all around. About three dogs were kept in cages on this floor.

"The dogs are operated downstairs and then brought to the top floor for healing. They don't face any problems. The weak dogs get infected and die,” said Doulat Bi, a cleaning lady at the clinic. In one of the rooms, there were tubs full of organs harvested from the dogs. The organs were stored in an unhygienic manner at room temperature. A stench filled the air.

“The tubs contain dog organs both male and female. They are stored for a few days and then sent outside. I am not sure where," said Doulat Bi.

Anuradha said the dogs are struggling to survive at this level of care. "They are starving, and the majority of them are unable to move. Almost all of them are in critical condition," she said.

The activists have sent an SOS to the municipal administration's principal secretary asking him to suspend the licence of the NGO and take disciplinary action against the commissioner in charge.

"All personnel working in the Boduppal municipality's dog sterilization wing should be issued stern warnings. The canines must be sent to GHMC facilities for care and rehabilitation. We demand that this NGO be immediately barred from operating any ABC centers in the future. A case should be filed against veterinary Dr. Karnati Srinivas, and a notice should be sent to the Veterinary Council of India to have his veterinary degree revoked," Jaideep Kumar stated.
