Ground Report: Pipeline works leave road near Tolichowki in disrepair for 15 months
Open drains, large potholes and overflowing sewage have turned daily commutes into a nightmare
By Anoushka Caroline Williams Published on 31 Aug 2024 3:00 AM GMTHyderabad: The subway road from Old Andhra Flour Mill in Nanal Nagar towards Tolichowki, a vital link for the local community, has been left in a state of disrepair for over a year.
The road, which serves several residential properties and passes by a Hindu graveyard, a Catholic church, and a mosque, was dug up for drainage pipeline work more than 15 months ago. Since then, the road has been left unattended, creating a dangerous and unsightly environment.
Potholes and open drains: A daily hazard
The current condition of the road has become a significant concern for residents.
Open drains, large potholes and overflowing sewage have turned daily commutes into a nightmare. Many residents express their frustration at the state of the road, which poses serious safety risks, especially during the rainy season when the road becomes nearly impassable.
āI have been living here for years, and Iāve never seen the road in such bad shape. Itās not just inconvenient; itās dangerous. The open drains are an accident waiting to happen,ā said Syed Anwar, a long-time resident of the area.
Partial road repairs during Ramzan: A source of contention
Adding to the residentsā frustration is the selective repair work carried out during the Ramzan season.
According to locals, a portion of the road in front of the mosque was repaired on a priority basis during the holy month, while the rest of the road was left untouched.
āItās disheartening to see how the authorities can respond quickly when they want to. The road in front of the mosque was laid within days, but what about the rest of us? Weāve been waiting for over a year,ā said Anand Kolagani, who lives near the Catholic church on the same road.
Unanswered appeals to local authorities
Despite repeated appeals to the local administration, including MLA Kausar Mohiuddin of the Karwan Constituency, the majority of the road remains in a deplorable state. Residents feel that their concerns are being ignored, and they are left to deal with the daily hardships on their own.
āWeāve contacted the authorities multiple times, but nothing changes. Weāre left to fend for ourselves, and it feels like no one cares,ā lamented Ravi Kumar, another resident.
A call for immediate action
The residents are calling for immediate action to be taken to address the condition of the road. With schools, places of worship, and residential buildings all affected, they argue that the neglect of this crucial road is unacceptable.
āThis road is a lifeline for many of us, and it needs to be fixed now. We canāt keep waiting while the situation gets worse,ā urged Ayesha Begum, another resident who uses the road daily.
The communityās patience is running thin, and there is a growing demand for accountability and swift action from local authorities to restore the road to a safe and usable condition.
