Ground Report: Pothole-filled Kondapur road turns dangerous for commuters amid monsoon showers

Hyderabad: A key stretch of road in Kondapur, connecting the bustling Kondapur Junction and the Police Camp Road near Pillar Numbers 42 and 43, has become a hazard zone for commuters and a symbol of civic neglect, claim frustrated residents.

For over two years, residents of Raghavendra Colony and adjoining areas have been navigating a broken, pothole-ridden road that worsens with each spell of rain.

The route, critical for daily traffic including buses, auto-rickshaws and private vehicles, has now become a recipe for accidents and gridlock.

Potholes disguised by waterlogging

During a recent visit by the NewsMeter, it was discovered that crater-like potholes stretching across several patches of the road were found.

In the monsoon months, these potholes are camouflaged under stagnant rainwater, making them nearly impossible to spot — a potential deathtrap for two-wheeler riders and a cause of severe vehicle damage.

ā€œI dread using this road during the rains. The potholes are so deep, it’s like driving through trenches. You don’t see them until the wheel drops in,ā€ says Ramesh G, a daily commuter who rides from Kondapur to Gachibowli.

Encroachments choke the artery

Adding to the chaos is rampant encroachment along the roadside. With shops and vendors spilling onto the road, vehicular movement is forced into a bottleneck. The stretch near Kondapur Junction, which also houses a major bus stop, sees traffic pile-ups every morning and evening.

ā€œThe autos stop anywhere; there’s no space to move. It becomes a free-for-all,ā€ says Priya Nair, a resident of Raghavendra Colony. ā€œEven ambulances struggle here.ā€

Residents’ pleas go unheard

Despite several complaints made on social media platforms like Twitter/X, residents say the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has not initiated any substantial repair work. Local resident Ron R recently wrote to the GHMC Commissioner, urging immediate action.

ā€œThis has gone beyond inconvenience. It’s now a serious safety and civic issue,ā€ he noted in his appeal.

A call for urgent civic response

Locals are demanding that GHMC carry out immediate road restoration work, fix the drainage to prevent water stagnation, and curb encroachments that are squeezing road space.

With rapid development and high traffic density, Kondapur has become one of Hyderabad’s busiest suburbs. But without functional roads, even basic commuting is turning into an ordeal.

ā€œIf this stretch isn’t fixed soon, it’s just a matter of time before a major accident occurs,ā€ warns a local traffic constable stationed near the junction.

Residents now await a firm and visible response from the civic authorities — before another monsoon adds more misery to their daily commute.
