Gypsum piece falls from Charminar’s pillar amid rain, raising preservation concerns
Hyderabad: A small piece of gypsum from one of Charminar’s pillars, from the side facing the nearby temple, chipped off during rainfall on Wednesday. No injuries or major structural damage have been reported, but the incident has raised concerns about the monument’s preservation.
The chipping occurred in the afternoon amid light to moderate rainfall. Locals noticed a small section of the plaster-like gypsum layer coming loose and falling to the ground.
Eyewitness accounts
Visitors and locals near the site expressed their concerns about the monument’s condition.
“I was walking past Charminar when I saw a few small fragments fall,” said a local shopkeeper. “It wasn’t a huge piece, but any damage to such an important monument is worrying.”
Another passerby, Sheikh Kareemunissa, who frequently visits the area, added, “Every year, we hear about minor damage to Charminar. I hope authorities take proper measures to preserve it before a major problem occurs.”
Similar incident in 2019
This is not the first time that Charminar has experienced damage due to environmental factors. On May 1, 2019, a portion of the lime stucco work from the southwestern minaret fell off following heavy rains. At the time, experts attributed the damage to natural wear and tear exacerbated by moisture and pollution.
“The structure is centuries old, and while it was built with durable materials, constant exposure to weathering has its effects,” reports read during the 2019 incident. “Regular maintenance is the key to preserving it for future generations.”
Preservation efforts and future steps
Charminar, constructed in 1591 by Mohammed Quli Qutb Shah, is one of Hyderabad’s most recognised landmarks. The ASI has been carrying out periodic maintenance to address issues such as surface wear, structural stress, and pollution damage.
Community concerns
Heritage conservationists and residents have long urged for increased efforts to maintain Charminar.
While today’s chipping incident was minor, experts stress the need for consistent conservation efforts to ensure that Charminar stands strong for future generations. Authorities are expected to provide further updates on restoration measures in the coming days.
