Hyderabad: MBBS student’s death in highway accident triggers protest in Hayathnagar; Komatireddy assures FoB

Hyderabad: Residents of Hayathnagar staged a protest on the National Highway (NH-65) on Tuesday, expressing serious concern over frequent road accidents in the area that have claimed several lives.

The agitators demanded the immediate construction of foot overbridges on the Hyderabad–Vijayawada Highway to ensure pedestrian safety.

MBBS student’s death triggers outrage

The protest gained momentum following the recent death of Aishwarya, a medical student, who was fatally injured while attempting to cross the highway. Locals said the incident was not an isolated one and accused authorities of ignoring repeated appeals for pedestrian infrastructure.

Protest over safety concerns

The protest was led by Hayathnagar Corporator Navajeevan Reddy and Mansoorabad Corporator Narasimha Reddy, along with residents from colonies on both sides of the national highway.

Raising slogans such as ‘Is this a National Highway or a Death Highway?’, the protesters highlighted the dangers faced by pedestrians while crossing the busy road.

The agitation led to severe traffic congestion, with vehicles coming to a standstill for a considerable period. Police rushed to the spot and held discussions with the protesters to restore normalcy.

Minister announces foot overbridge

Responding to the protest, Roads and Buildings Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy announced that a foot overbridge would be constructed at Lecturers Colony in the Hayathnagar area.

He directed officials to complete the project within three months.

The minister said the delay in construction was due to certain objections and procedural issues, which have now been addressed.

Officials inspect proposed site

Following the minister’s assurance, concerned officials visited Lecturers Colony and inspected the proposed site for the foot overbridge. Preparatory steps for initiating construction are underway, officials said.

Residents have welcomed the announcement but stressed that timely execution is crucial to prevent further loss of lives.
