HC: PIL wants state to pay Rs 10 lakhs to kin of Telangana flood victims

Hyderabad: Dr Balmoori Venkat Narasimha, TS NSUI president and a social worker on Tuesday filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking a court order to the state government to pay a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the family members of the persons who died in the recent Telangana floods

The petitioner argued that the Disaster Management Act of 2005 mandates the states to pay an ex-gratia to the kith and kin of all persons, who lost their lives in a natural calamity i.e. earthquake, floods, famine etc. Non-payment of the ex-gratia will be a blatant violation of the act, the petitioner said.

Extending financial help to people in distress will help mitigate their problems and the state cannot deny compensation to those affected persons, the PIL stated.

Apart from the above, the petitioner has asked the court to order the state government to pay Rs 50,000 per acre to all farmers whose standing crops were washed away in the floods and also extend to them financial benefits under the Rythu Bandhu scheme.

The Union of India, chief secretary TS, principal secretaries of Revenue and GAD, district collectors of Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Asifabad, Peddapallyh, Adilabad, Warangal, Hanamkonda and Hyderabad, TS Power Generation Corporation and director general, TS Disaster Response Services are respondents in the PIL.
