HCU sexual assault: Accused professor sent to Sangareddy jail for 14 days remand

Hyderabad: The University of Hyderabad (UoH) professor who attempted to sexually assault a foreign student has been sent to Sangareddy jail for 14 days remand. The 62-year-old professor Ravi Ranjan is a faculty member of the university's department of Hindi.

Gachibowli inspector G. Suresh on Sunday confirmed that the professor has been sent for 14 days remand to Sangareddy jail.

On 3 December, the Gachibowli police arrested professor Ravi Ranjan and booked him under section 354 and 354 A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Hours after his arrest, he was suspended by the university.

"The University of Hyderabad condemns the incident that occurred involving Prof. Ravi Ranjan, Department of Hindi and a student on December 2, 2022. Prof. Ravi Ranjan is placed under suspension with immediate effect," read the official statement from the university.

On 3 December, the students of the university protested against the university Registrar's inaction towards the incident. According to sources from the students' union, the Registrar of the university delayed filing a formal police complaint against the professor. The protestors dispersed after professor Ravi Ranjan was suspended.

According to sources, on the evening of 2 December, the girl was taken to the professor's residence outside the campus where he stayed alone. She was forced to consume alcohol and the professor touched her inappropriately. At around 9:30 p.m, the professor dropped the girl off at the Tagore International hostel on the campus.
