Hyderabad: The Government of Telangana has issued a general health advisory warning citizens to stay cautious against seasonal flu as the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad, forecasts dry weather and below-normal minimum temperatures, by 2°C to 3°C, across several parts of the state over the next week.
According to the Office of the Director of Public Health and Family Welfare, the drop in temperature could increase the spread of acute respiratory infections, including seasonal flu.
Understanding seasonal flu
Seasonal flu is described in the advisory as ‘an acute and contagious respiratory infection characterised by fever, cough, sore throat, body ache and fatigue.’ It spreads easily from person to person, particularly when an infected individual coughs or sneezes.
The advisory notes that most people recover within a week through adequate rest, hydration, and home-based care.
Vulnerable groups at higher risk
Health officials cautioned that certain groups are more prone to severe illness.
“The vulnerable groups such as pregnant women, children under 5 years, older adults (>65 years) and individuals with chronic medical conditions are at greater risk of severe illness, and if they develop symptoms like seasonal flu are advised to consult a doctor at a nearby health facility,” stated Dr B Ravinder Nayak, Director of Public Health and Family Welfare.
He further urged that anyone showing warning signs such as high fever, difficulty in breathing, blue colour of skin or lips, blood in sputum or altered behaviour should immediately seek medical attention at the nearest government health facility.
Public health measures are in place
The Government of Telangana has made elaborate arrangements by providing special beds and essential medicines at all the public health facilities, Dr Nayak added.
For emergencies, citizens can call the 108 Ambulance Service for immediate medical assistance.
