Hyderabad: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Hyderabad has issued an orange alert for the city, forecasting intense rainfall over the weekend.

The alert, which is in place for both Saturday and Sunday, predicts moderate to heavy rains with gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph.

According to the IMD, the anticipated weather conditions could lead to water pooling on roads, especially in low-lying areas and significant traffic congestion across the city. The agency has also warned of wet and slippery roads, with a potential risk of trees and electric poles falling due to the strong winds.

Shift in rainfall pattern from night to day

Weather experts have indicated a shift from recent night-time rains to more persistent daytime rainfall, bringing cooler and breezier conditions across Telangana. Intense downpours are expected in the northern, central, and eastern parts of the State, with a yellow alert for moderate rains and thundershowers.

T Balaji, popularly known as the Telangana Weatherman, commented on the situation via X (formerly Twitter), stating, ā€œRain intensity will increase in Hyderabad after 9 am with continuous moderate rains ahead. Flooding rains from this system could impact the Krishna, Musi and Manjeera rivers.ā€

He further added, ā€œThe depression track is shifting down, and itā€™s likely to bring serious rains to Central and South Telangana in the next 48 hours. Hyderabad is also expected to experience flooding rains from this system. Stay safe, everyone.ā€

Authorities on high alert

City authorities are on high alert to manage potential flooding and other impacts of the intense rains. With the possibility of disruptions to electricity, water supply, and other essential services, the GHMC and related agencies are prepared to respond swiftly to any emergencies that may arise.

Residents are urged to stay updated on weather conditions and follow the advisories issued by the authorities to ensure their safety during the anticipated heavy rains.

Heavy rainfall across Telangana

The IMD has extended its warning to several districts, including Nizamabad, Jagital, Rajanna Sircilla, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Mahabubabad and Siddipet, where intense downpours and thunderstorms are anticipated.

On Sunday, heavy rains are expected to continue in districts such as Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad and Kamareddy.

Since the onset of the Southwest monsoon in early June, Telangana has recorded an average of 627.6 mm of rainfall, exceeding the normal average of 558.6 mm by 12 per cent. Hyderabad has received 511.5 mm, surpassing its usual 450 mm by 14 per cent. Despite the increase, the rainfall levels remain within the normal range.

However, with the forecast of extremely heavy rains over the weekend, the total rainfall for both Hyderabad and Telangana is expected to rise further.

Safety measures and public advisory

In response to the forecast, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has issued a safety advisory urging residents to exercise caution, particularly in flood-prone areas.

The civic body has advised keeping children indoors and avoiding waterlogged streets and flooded roads, especially for two-wheelers.

GHMC officials have emphasised the importance of public safety and provided emergency contact numbers for immediate assistance.
