Heavy rains lash Hyderabad; power supply snapped, roads inundated

By Newsmeter Network Published on 21 Jun 2022 7:49 AM GMTHyderabad: Heavy rains lashed the city on Monday night. Several places in the city received heavy rainfall ranging from 64.5 mm to 114.5 mm, according to the Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS).
TSDPS data showed that Madhapur received the city's highest rainfall of 102.3mm, followed by Balanagar-76.8 mm and Ferozguda-73.8mm. Quthbullapur (71.8mm), Jeedimetla (71.5mm), RC Puram (70mm), UoH (69.8mm), Moosapet (68 mm), and Chandanagar (64.5mm) also received heavy rainfall above 64.5 mm.
According to independent weather observers, the north and east Telangana districts received massive rainfall overnight.
Ameenapur in Sangareddy recorded the state's highest rainfall of 124.3 mm in the last 24 hours. Several other places in Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Karimnagar, Warangal, Hanamkonda, Nizamabad, Mancherial, Jagtial, etc received heavy rainfall.
5-6 hours power cut
Several places in the city also witnessed power failures. Some of the areas in the city faced power cuts for around 5-6 hours. Balanagar, Ameerpet, Shaikpet, and Nizampet also faced long hours of power cuts. Some of the frustrated residents took to Twitter to raise their grievances.
"Power cut in Nizampet from around 10 pm till now. Power cut just for normal rain. I just wonder whether we are in Hyderabad or a village," tweeted Nithin Kumar Basetti.
"Why every time feeder trips sir and there is a power cut for 5 to 6 hours. God knows how the electricity department works," Ravindra tweeted.
Most of the roads in the city were also flooded in the rains worsened by the overflowing water pipes on roadsides with extreme pressure especially at PVNR Expressway Attapur in Rajendra Nagar causing trouble to pedestrians and vehicles traveling that route.
Thunderstorms during monsoon showers
Last night's rains were accompanied by lightning and thunderstorms. Usually, lightning and thunderstorms occur along with pre-monsoon and post-monsoon showers.
"The monsoons have just started and there is a lot of heat still present in the atmosphere. Monsoon rains during June and September months are accompanied by lightning and thunder due to excess land heat," explained independent weather observer Mahaboob Khan popularly called Weather Brother.
What to look for
Telangana is likely to receive heavy rainfall on Tuesday and Wednesday as well. IMD issued a yellow alert on 21 and 22 June. Light to moderate rains are expected thereafter till 24 June, according to IMD weekly weather forecast.
T Balaji popular as Telangana Weatherman also said that good rains, not as heavy as that of Monday are expected across the state including Hyderabad on Tuesday night as well.
"Sky clearing up again in entire Telangana, this will open the door once again for thunderstorms in Telangana during Afternoon - night Though there won't be huge rains like yesterday, but even today some good rains on cards in TS due to good heat. Hyderabad again has good chances for moderate thunderstorms today during the afternoon - night, won't rain too heavily like yesterday, but rains ahead today too (sic)," he tweeted.
