Here’s why Yadav community celebrates Sadar festival after Diwali

Hyderabad: Hyderabad, on the second day after Diwali, is set to come alive with the vibrant festivities of the Sadar festival, an annual carnival of buffaloes celebrated by the Yadav community. Known locally as Dunnapothula Panduga, this cultural tradition holds a special place in the hearts of the community members.

Nand Kishore Yadav, a prominent bull organiser, emphasised the festival’s importance, stating, “Sadar Sammelan is the Yadav community’s oldest festival.”

Originating in 1942, this event has evolved into the biggest festival for the Yadav community in Telangana. Despite its regional roots, the festival echoes across India, adapting different names in various states, such as Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu.

The festival’s significance ties back to Dwapar Yug, as Nand Kishore Yadav explained, “During Dwapar Yug, Lord Krishna lifted the mountain on his finger and saved people, and that’s why we celebrate the festival.”

This historical connection adds a deeper layer to the celebration, uniting participants in the shared cultural narrative. Beyond its historical roots, the Sadar festival serves as a powerful community get-together in both villages and towns.

The inclusive nature of the celebration is highlighted by Nand Kishore Yadav, who noted, “All people of all religions, irrespective of caste and creed, take part in this festival, especially the youth.”

The festival’s core focus is the carnival of buffaloes, a spectacle that draws participants and spectators alike. The event serves as a testament to the cultural richness of the Yadav community, showcasing their traditions and fostering a sense of collective pride.

This annual celebration has grown into Telangana’s largest festival for the community. With its roots in history and its inclusive spirit, the Sadar Festival brings people of different backgrounds together, embodying the essence of cultural harmony.
