Himayatnagar sewer runoff flooding Adarshnagar basti for 30 years; HYDRAA inspects drains

HYDRAA Commissioner Ranganath conducted a field-level inspection of the affected Himayatnagar–Adarshnagar corridor on Tuesday.

Hyderabad: Residents of Adarshnagar Basti on Tuesday told HYDRAA Commissioner AV Ranganath that sewage and rainwater flowing down from Himayatnagar have been flooding their locality for nearly three decades, causing persistent hardship.

They demanded a permanent solution instead of temporary patchwork repairs. Himayatnagar Corporator Mahalakshmi Ramangaud was present during the inspection and briefed officials on the severity, depth and frequency of the flooding problem.

HYDRAA Commissioner conducts ground-level inspection

Following repeated public complaints, HYDRAA Commissioner Ranganath conducted a field-level inspection of the affected Himayatnagar–Adarshnagar corridor here.

During his visit, he interacted with residents and reviewed on-site the causes behind the recurring sewer overflow and flooding.

Sewage mixing with borewells putting drinking water at risk

Residents complained that stagnant sewage water frequently enters houses, borewells and stormwater drains, resulting in the contamination of drinking water. Officials were told that even light rainfall leads to waterlogging as the sewage has no proper outlet.

Hussainsagar nala nearby, yet no proper outflow

Though the Hussainsagar nala is just a few 100 metres away, residents pointed out that poor connectivity and damaged pipelines were preventing smooth discharge of sewage and floodwater, leading to repeated inundation of residential streets.

Works to be extended up to Hussainsagar

Assuring residents of a long-term solution, the HYDRAA Commissioner directed that the drainage works must be taken up all the way up to the Hussainsagar nala, instead of stopping at the basti limits.

Immediate repairs and pipe replacement ordered

The Commissioner instructed officials to study the gradient and natural flow of floodwater, immediately replace damaged sewer pipelines over a 6-metre stretch, install larger-capacity pipelines after assessing the inflow, and design the system keeping in view future residential growth.

He directed that the work be taken up immediately since the monsoon season had ended.

35-metre retaining wall was also found damaged

Officials informed the Commissioner that a 35-metre-long stretch of the Hussainsagar retaining wall had been damaged. He ordered that the restoration work should be completed along with drainage repairs on priority.

The inspection was attended by HYDRAA DFO Yajna Narayana, HMWSSB DGM Krishnayya, GHMC DE Praveen Kumar, HYDRAA SFOs P Dattu and Ch Srinivas, other officials from GHMC, HYDRAA and the Water Board.
