Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has issued a public warning after several consumers reported receiving fraudulent SMS messages claiming unpaid water bills and threatening immediate disconnection of water supply.
Fraudsters sending threat messages through random numbers
According to officials, unknown individuals are sending messages from random mobile numbers, falsely stating that the previous month’s water bill has not been cleared. The message further directs consumers to contact another mobile number to avoid disconnection.
The HMWSSB confirmed that these messages are not from the Water Board and are part of a phishing attempt to mislead consumers.
Scam uses APK files to gain phone access
Once contacted, the fraudsters allegedly send an APK file through WhatsApp under the guise of processing payment or verifying billing details.
The Board has warned that installing such files may compromise users’ personal data, including financial information, phone access, and stored passwords.
Consumers asked not to respond or download files
The HMWSSB has advised citizens to ignore these messages, avoid calling the phone numbers mentioned in them, and importantly, not to download or install any APK applications received through WhatsApp or SMS.
Officials emphasized that responding to such messages may put users at risk of digital theft and cyber fraud.
Official updates only through verified platforms
The Board reiterated that all authentic communication relating to billing, service updates, or announcements will be issued only through official channels, including newspapers, authorised digital platforms, and television networks.
Consumers facing service-related issues, billing queries, or requiring clarification are requested to contact the official Water Board customer care number: 155313.
