Hyderabad: Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has flagged fraudulent WhatsApp messages threatening consumers to disconnect their water supply over unpaid bills.
The scam involves messages sent from the mobile number 84271 56645, falsely claiming that HMWSSB will disconnect water connections by 9:30 pm due to non-payment of the previous monthās bill. The message urges recipients to contact another number, 90649 53421, for assistance.
Consumers targeted with malicious APK files
Upon calling the provided number, unsuspecting consumers are sent an APK file via WhatsApp, supposedly for further bill processing. Authorities have warned that downloading such files could lead to security breaches and financial fraud, as they may contain malicious software.
No such messages sent by HMWSSB, says Board
In an official clarification, HMWSSB managing director Ashok Reddy stated that the board does not issue bill-related messages or disconnection warnings via WhatsApp. He also condemned the messages as unauthorized and misleading, and urged the public not to respond, engage with the senders, or download any files.
Cybercrime investigation underway
Taking serious note of the incident, the Water Board has formally requested the Cyber Crimes Department to investigate the matter and trace those responsible for the scam.
Citizens are advised to use the official helpline.
HMWSSB reiterated that all legitimate communication from the Board is routed through authorized and secure channels. For any clarifications or service-related issues, residents are advised to contact the official helpline at 155313.
