Hyderabad: Swift action by HYDRAA averted large-scale flooding in Hyderabad this monsoon.
This is despite the fact that Hyderabad braved several spells of cloudburst-like rainfall this monsoon, with the city recording 10 to 18 cm of rain in a single day on multiple occasions.
By removing nearly 3,000 truckloads of silt from stormwater nalas, the agency ensured the free flow of rainwater and prevented overflows in several vulnerable localities, said HYDRAA Commissioner AV Ranganath.
He was speaking at a felicitation programme held at Jal Vihar on Friday to mark the completion of 150 days of monsoon emergency operations.
City is protected through continuous vigil
The Commissioner said HYDRAA emerged as a reliable shield for Hyderabad during the monsoon. Continuous desilting of catch pits, culverts, and nalas, along with advanced preventive planning, helped avert flood threats even during intense downpours.
He said the public moved without fear during heavy rains as traffic remained largely unaffected and colonies were protected from waterlogging.
Monsoon emergency teams praised
Praising the Monsoon Emergency Teams (METs), Disaster Response Force (DRF), SF Volunteer, and marshals, Mr. Ranganath said the teams went beyond routine complaint resolution and focused on addressing the root causes of flooding. Their commitment, he added, brought a good name to both HYDRAA and the government.
Major flood prevention successes
He cited Ameerpet as a key success story where extensive desilting works prevented flooding. Similarly, removal of encroachments along the Patny Nala safeguarded 25 colonies and bastis from water inundation.
Staff welfare and skill development in focus
The Commissioner said HYDRAA also prioritised the personal and professional growth of its staff. Personality development, financial discipline, and lifestyle management programmes were conducted during the season.
On the occasion, trainers Vanga Rajendra Prasad, M. Narsing, and Chillanchetti Ganesh were felicitated with mementoes.
30 personnel honoured for exemplary service
As many as 30 outstanding personnel from the Monsoon Emergency Teams were honoured with appreciation certificates, cash rewards, and shawls. The Commissioner commended the staff who worked relentlessly, even foregoing festival holidays.
HYDRAA Additional Director Varla Papaiah explained the working of the DRF and SF volunteers during the monsoon, while HYDRA Admin SP R. Sudarshan spoke on the importance of health care and financial savings among personnel.
