HPS Societys `financial irregularities’: Telangana HC asks Pr Secy SED to examine petitioner’s representation

Hyderabad: Telangana High Court has directed the Principal Secretary of the School Education Department (SED) to examine a representation alleging large-scale mismanagement and financial irregularities in the Hyderabad Public School (HPS) Society, which manages the Begumpet and Ramanthapur branches.

A division bench of Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and Justice GM Mohiuddin issued the order while hearing a petition filed by Durgam Ravinder, a journalist from Secunderabad, seeking a government probe into the functioning of the HPS management.

Petitioner flags violations of Bye-Laws

In his plea, Ravinder alleged that the HPS Society has violated its own bye-laws, ignoring mandatory reservations for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Backward Classes in both admissions and staff recruitment.

He further claimed that several unqualified candidates were appointed as teachers on a contract basis, undermining the quality of education and transparency in the hiring process.

Irregularities in Contracts and Fee Structure

The petitioner also accused the school management of awarding contracts for sports, catering, security, and IT services to relatives and associates of the Board members, raising concerns over nepotism and misuse of power.

Additionally, he alleged that the school continues to charge exorbitant fees from parents, in violation of its founding principles and public-interest obligations.

`Serious allegations'

During the hearing, the Division Bench observed that the petitioner had made serious allegations against the HPS Society, warranting an examination by the competent authorities.

Accordingly, the Bench directed the Principal Secretary of the School Education Department to review the representation and take appropriate action in accordance with the law.

Next Hearing

The court adjourned the matter, directing the Education Department to file a response after examining the allegations and the petitioner’s representation.
