Hyderabad: Dr. Avula Laxmaiah, a scientist and head of the public health nutrition division of ICMR–National Institute of Nutrition, has been elected as a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI) in recognition of his exemplary contributions to the field of nutrition and medical sciences.
He has contributed to developing and reforming several nutrition plans and programmes. He also led the implementation of the technology-based real-time nutrition surveillance system to monitor the nutritional status of women and children in rural areas.
He worked on large-scale epidemiological studies, translational research-cum-impact evaluations, and Randomized Clinical Trials (RCTs) in public health nutrition.
Dr. Laxmaiah is a medical graduate with a Master's in public health and a Ph.D. in public health nutrition and has been associated with ICMR-NIN for over three decades.
The National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI) is one of the oldest science academies in India, founded with the aim of providing a national forum for scientific exchange and the popularisation of science.
