Hyderabad: 125-year-old Murgi Chowk set to get Rs 36 crore infra boost
The restoration project of Murgi Chowk Market will be undertaken jointly by the GHMC and the Quli Qutub Shah Urban Development Authority
By Newsmeter Network Published on 9 Jun 2023 4:57 AM GMTHyderabad: The 125-year-old Murgi Chowk, also known as Mahbub Chowk Market, is set to undergo a comprehensive reconstruction project to revive its former glory.
The market, a significant landmark in Hyderabad, is currently in a dilapidated state, prompting the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and the Quli Qutub Shah Urban Development Authority to initiate the restoration effort.
Responding to concerns about the future of Murgi Chowk on Twitter, Municipal Administration & Urban Development Special Chief Secretary Arvind Kumar assured the public that the new Murgi Chowk would retain its original architectural design elements.
"Murgi Chowk, in its present condition, was dilapidated and uninhabitable. The new Murgi Chowk will have the same architectural design elements and, once done, will be a major tourist attraction," said Arvind Kumar, emphasizing that the due process, including public notification and intimation, had been followed.

The restoration project of Murgi Chowk Market, with an estimated cost of Rs 36 crore, will be undertaken jointly by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and the Quli Qutub Shah Urban Development Authority. As part of the restoration, a G+1 building will be constructed for the meat market, featuring a restaurant on the first floor.
Historians highlight that Murgi Chowk was built in the European architectural style during the reign of VI Nizam, Mir Mahboob Ali Khan. The concept of creating a separate area for the sale of meat was introduced by VI Nizam's prime minister, Sir Vicar-ul-Umra. Over the years, Murgi Chowk has become an integral part of Hyderabad's cultural heritage.
In December, Special Chief Secretary Arvind Kumar announced the reconstruction plans. "Mahbub Chowk Market (aka #MurghiChowk) is completely dilapidated & on the verge of collapse. @GHMCOnline & #QQSUDA are taking up its reconstruction & redevelopment (keeping original style intact), costing Rs 36 crs; commencing in Dec 22 & will take 18 months," he tweeted.
Restoration of Murgi Chowk is likely to be completed within one and a half years. Currently, the traders of the market have been shifted to a nearby field.
Recent successful restoration projects of historical landmarks in Hyderabad, such as Muazzam Jahi Market, Clock Tower, and Bansilalpet Stepwell, have inspired efforts to restore the grandeur of Murgi Chowk, Mir Alam Mandi, and Sardar Mahal under the supervision of the Quli Qutub Shah Urban Development Authority (QQSUDA).
