Hyderabad: 14-month-old from Kothapet youngest in South India to donate organs

Hyderabad: The parents of a 14-month-old baby, who was confirmed brain dead, donated the infantā€™s organs. This made them the youngest person in South India to donate organs.

Srikanth and Santoshi, who live in Hyderabadā€™s Kothapet, had twins. One of them recently became dehydrated after which her parents hurriedly took her to a nearby hospital. As the babyā€™s condition deteriorated, they transferred her to the KIMS hospital in Secunderabad.

For three days, doctors tried to save the infant. Unfortunately, she was confirmed brain dead and passed away on Thursday night. The organ donation coordinators counselled the babyā€™s parents and relatives on the significance of organ donation. After this, the parents chose to donate the babyā€™s kidneys and eyes.

Srikanth, the babyā€™s father, works as an Amazon delivery agent and Santoshi, is a homemaker. Despite grieving their childā€™s death, they were relieved that their child helped save two lives.

According to Jeevandaan committee members, a green route assisted the organs in reaching their destination in time. The Jeevandaan website states that 1,256 people have donated their organs since 2013 through their programme, and the year 2023 has seen a total of 94 donors.
