Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Traffic Police caught as many as 13,933 motorists who were driving in a drunken state between August 24 and November 21, said additional commissioner of police (Traffic), Hyderabad P Viswa Prasad on Saturday.

Apart from that as many as 13,188 chargesheets have been filed in various courts on the motorists and the same have been disposed of, he added.

824 drunk drivers jailed in three months

Elaborating further, he said that so far during this year, as many as 52,080 drunk drivers have been caught and brought to book.

During the last three months, as many as 824 drunk drivers have been sentenced to imprisonment from 1 to 10 days and as many as 227 drunk drivers have been sentenced to do social service for two days.

Further, as many as 99 driving licences were also suspended for two to six months by the RTO based on the orders of magistrates. The courts also have imposed a fine of Rs 2,87,20,600 on all the violators. During the special drive on November 9 against drunk driving, as many as 327 drunk drivers were caught and cases were booked against them U/s 185 of MV Act, the ACP said.

On a single day as many as 44 drunk drivers were sentenced and sent to jail on November 4, alone for a maximum period of 4 days and the minimum being two days. On the other hand, as many as 633 motorists with Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) exceeding 200 mg./100 ml. of blood were caught which is well beyond the permissible limit of 30 mg/100ml.

Maximum offenders drove two-wheelers

Of all the drunk drivers caught during the last three months, the maximum caught were the two-wheeler drivers i.e. 11,904 (85%).

The drunk drivers were also counselled at the Traffic Training Institutes of Goshamahal and Begumpet in the presence of their family members. The motorists should remember that alcohol hampers their vision due to dizziness and it also dampens fear and incite humans to take risks. All these factors while driving result in accidents and many times it proves fatal, he said.

ā€œDrunk driving is an offence under section 185 of the M.V. Act with a punishment of fine up to Rs 10,000 and or 6 months imprisonment. The driving licences of repeat violators will be suspended by the RTO for a period of 3 months and above (or) permanently.ā€

ā€œWe appeal to all motorists to not drive the vehicle in a drunken state, as it may lead to road accidents which may affect not only themselves but also other road users who are innocent. If you have alcoholic drinks, use public transport or cab or auto rickshaws or bike taxis to get home safely,ā€ the ACP said.
