Hyderabad: A single mothers struggle to save her ailing son

Hyderabad: Arfath Begum sobs quietly in the corner of her small room as her ailing 14-year-old son Shaik Khaja Gareeb Nawaz groans with pain.

Hailing from Khilwat in the old city, Arfath has been going from one hospital to another to get her son treated. But due to financial constraints, no hospital is ready to operate her son.

Shaik Khaja Gareeb Nawaz is suffering from congenital heart disease and needs to be urgently operated upon.

"For the last three months, he has started to get severe pain. We went to Osmania General Hospital for treatment. For 10-15 days, doctors just made us come to roam around the hospital and finally, they said they can't operate on him in the hospital. He needs to operated upon somewhere else," said Arfath.

Later she went to KIMS Hospital, Secunderabad which agreed to operate her son on an emergency basis but asked her to deposit money. "My husband died when Shaik Khaja Gareeb was a toddler. I teach Arabic to neighbor kids to sustain family. I don't have enough money. Hospital is charging Rs 3.5 lakh for the surgery. I don't want to lose my son," said Arfath.

Desperate to save her son, she has appealed for help so that her son's life could be saved. "I don't have much in life, I just have my kids. I am just looking for some help so that my son is operated upon," she said.
