Hyderabad: After Jhamunda, new Insta pages slut-shame, harass couples

Hyderabad: Akshay (name changed) had sleepless nights in the last one week. He has been targeted by the Instagram page 'Jhamunda and its allies' for the last two months. In the last one week, things have been going out of his control. Some of these pages have been publicly sharing his details including his address and phone number.

Earlier, Jhamunda_2 Instagram page shared his photo and called him a rapist. The page administrator alleged that the boy raped his sister and that he has been kicked out of his home. Further, they requested to find out more details about the boy. He was also attacked by an Instagram page 'Kingdom of Malakpet', which is now deleted.

Akshay does not know why he is being targeted but he said that the attacks began after he commented on Twitter that posted an article on the Jhamunda team.

"I had written that something. That could be the reason they are targeting me," he said.

Akshay is planning to file a complaint at the police station soon.

About who leaked his details to these cyberbullying teams, he said somebody who knew him would have shared his personal information.

What happened to Jhamunda?

An Instagram page `jhamunda_official' was posting abusive content against women, from one particular community and moral policing couples. They slut shamed women through their posts. Their posts were aimed to spread hatred among communities. All these posts were accompanied by abusive comments.

Jhamunda_official._used to be the primary page through which the team operated. Besides, they operated Jhamunda 2, Jhamunda, etc. All these pages have been deleted from Instagram. According to sources, Hyderabad cyber crime police had written to Instagram about the pages. Following the complaint, Instagram is removing pages that are found to be sharing abusive content.

Currently, Jhamunda_2 and Jhamunda army are the pages that continue to exist. But apparently, the same people -- Jhamunda and their followers -- have started new pages where they are active nowadays with new names including Ghuroor_todh, Gand_todh, Alvirah_18, etc.

Akshay was also targeted by these new pages. He and his friends had reported the page Ghuroor_Todh. Subsequently, the Ghuroor_Todh page was removed by Instagram. Now the same group has opened another page Ghuroor_Todh 2.0.

Among the active pages, Gand_Todh has the largest number of 288 followers and 22 posts. "Hum ko chidho math, hamko chidhe agar ji, hum chodengi nahi, yeh toh thay hein (Don't mock us, if you mock us, we will not leave you, this is for sure)'' reads one of the messages o this page.

Investigation

Telangana Cyber Crime police had registered four cases against the administrator of the Jhamunda official page under Sections 509, 506, and 354 (d) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). However, the police have not made much progress after that. They say it involves another country and it is a time-taking procedure.

"In the four cases, we have found that the IP addresses of the administrator are from the UAE. It is a lengthy process," said KVM Prasad, ACP CCS Cyber Crime.
