Hyderabad airport completes runway upgrade for better aircraft landing in low visibility

Hyderabad: Airport upgrades facilities for aircraft to land in low visibility conditions of up to 300 meters on the runway

Hyderabad: GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited (GHIAL) has completed the installation and commissioning of the Category II Instrument Landing System (ILS) on its primary runway, enhancing its operational efficiency and safety measures. The upgrade enables aircraft to land in low visibility conditions of up to 300 meters (Runway Visual Range - RVR).

The enhanced system is said to be particularly beneficial during foggy conditions or when visual references are limited.

Enhanced landing capabilities

The newly installed CAT II ILS system provides pilots with improved navigation accuracy through advanced radio signals and ground lighting systems. This marks an upgrade from the previous CAT I system, which had higher visibility requirements for safe landings.

Additionally, GHIAL has received approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to upgrade its secondary runway to CAT I status. This will allow it to support operations in visibility as low as 550 meters RVR, ensuring continuity during contingencies affecting the primary runway.

Commenting on the development, Pradeep Panicker, CEO of GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited, said, ā€œThe implementation of these advanced navigational systems represents a significant milestone in GMR Hyderabad International Airportā€™s technological infrastructure development. This enhancement substantially elevates our operational parameters while ensuring adherence to the highest safety standards in aviation operations.ā€

Reduced flight disruptions

With the upgraded system, the airport aims to minimise disruptions caused by low-visibility conditions, reducing inconvenience to passengers and improving operational efficiency.

The upgrade aligns with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) specifications and has received all necessary approvals from the DGCA. The upgraded landing systems are expected to benefit both domestic and international flights operating from Hyderabad.
