Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana witness rain and thunderstorms, more expected
Hyderabad: Several areas in Telangana, including Hyderabad, are experiencing moderate rainfall and thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds (30-40 km/h) and lightning. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad, the rain is expected to persist for the next 24 hours in certain zones, including Charminar, Khairatabad, Kukatpally, LB Nagar, Secunderabad and Serilingampally.
The weather forecast issued by the Meteorological Centre indicates generally cloudy skies with moderate thundershowers today and tomorrow. A shift to partly cloudy and hazy conditions is expected from April 5 onward.
Why is it raining?
The current rainfall is due to pre-monsoon convective activity and a trough extending from northern India to the southern peninsula. These factors are drawing moisture from the Bay of Bengal, triggering thunderstorms.
Speaking to NewsMeter, KS Sridhar, a meteorologist at IMD Hyderabad, explained, āThis kind of weather is typical in April. The combination of intense heating and moisture incursion results in thunderstorms, which can sometimes bring gusty winds and heavy rain in short bursts.ā
Weather forecast: Whatās next?
According to the five-day forecast by IMD Hyderabad, the intensity of thunderstorms will gradually reduce:
ā¢ April 3-4: Moderate rain or thundershowers with gusty winds (30-40 km/h).
ā¢ April 5: Partly cloudy skies with light rainfall in some areas.
ā¢ April 6-7: Hazy conditions with no significant rain expected.
Sridhar said, āThe rain is expected to decrease after April 4. From April 6, dry weather is likely to prevail, but temperatures will rise in several districts.ā
Hyderabad and across Telangana to see some relief from heat
The showers have provided some respite from the rising summer temperatures, with Hyderabadās maximum temperature staying below 36Ā°C for now. However, districts like Adilabad, Nizamabad and Karimnagar are expected to see temperatures rising to 41-44Ā°C from April 5 onward.
Possible disruptions
ā¢ Roads and Traffic: Water pooling on roads in low-lying areas, leading to minor traffic congestion.
ā¢ Electricity and Infrastructure: There is a possibility of trees and electric poles falling in some areas due to gusty winds.
ā¢ Agriculture: Farmers in districts such as Nalgonda and Karimnagar are concerned about potential damage to rabi crops like maize and pulses.
Traffic Disruptions in Hyderabad Due to Heavy Rain and Water Logging
1. Tree Fall Near Mercury Hotel KCP Slows Traffic
Traffic movement is slow in areas including Khairatabad, VV Statue, Eenadu, KCP, Erramanjil, NIMS, and Panjagutta X Road due to a tree fall near Mercury Hotel KCP caused by heavy rain. Traffic Police from Saifabad and Panjagutta are on-site to facilitate the smooth flow of vehicles.
2. Water Logging Near Prajabhavan Affects Vehicle Movement
Due to waterlogging near Prajabhavan, vehicle movement is slow from TV-9, Sultan Uloom College, NFCL, Panjagutta Flyover, and Prajabhavan towards Begumpet Flyover. The Panjagutta Traffic Police have been alerted to manage the situation and ensure traffic clearance.
Precautionary measures
ā¢ Avoid outdoor activities during thunderstorms.
ā¢ Stay away from open fields, trees, and electric poles to prevent lightning-related incidents.
ā¢ Drivers should be cautious on wet roads, especially in low-lying areas.
ā¢ Farmers should take the necessary precautions to protect crops from unexpected rainfall.
The current rainfall and thunderstorms are part of seasonal pre-monsoon activity. While the showers have brought temporary relief from the summer heat, they have also raised concerns about traffic, infrastructure, and agriculture. As dry conditions return by the weekend, residents should remain alert to rising temperatures in the coming days.
