Hyderabad: The city police have arrested two interstate robbery offenders involved in an armed heist near the SBI ATM at Koti, where a man was shot at and robbed of Rs 6 lakh cash last month.

The accused, armed with a country-made pistol, had forcibly confined and assaulted the victim before fleeing with the cash and his two-wheeler.

The accused were arrested on Tuesday by the Commissioner’s Task Force teams of Secunderabad and Khairatabad zones, along with Sultan Bazar Police, in connection with Crime No. 28/2026 under Sections 109, 309 BNS and Section 27 of the Arms Act.

Accused arrested

Disclosing the case details before the media here, DCP (Task Force) Gaikwad Vaibhav Raghunath said that the arrested accused have been identified as: Furkhan Ahmed (36), a native of Saharanpur district, Uttar Pradesh, and Mohd Taiyyab Tyagi (30), a cab driver residing at Shaheen Nagar, Balapur, originally from Muzaffarnagar district, Uttar Pradesh.

The DCP said five other accused, Faheem Ahmed, Naushad, Abid, Danish Tyagi and Mohd Matlub, all natives of Uttar Pradesh, are absconding.

How the robbery was executed

Elaborating further, the DCP said that Taiyyab Tyagi, who had been working as an Ola and Uber driver in Hyderabad since February 2024, observed during early morning rides that several people deposited large sums of cash at ATM deposit machines in Abids, Koti and Nampally areas.

Facing financial difficulties and having a prior criminal background, he allegedly hatched a plan to target such individuals. He contacted his uncle Naushad and cousin Danish Tyagi in Uttar Pradesh, who roped in Furkhan Ahmed, Abid and Faheem Ahmed for the operation.

On January 31, in the early hours, Taiyyab and Abid conducted reconnaissance near Nampally Railway Station, while Furkhan and Faheem waited inside the SBI ATM at Koti armed with a country-made firearm.

When the victim arrived to deposit cash, the accused barged in, threatened him at gunpoint and opened fire during a scuffle, one bullet hitting the floor and another injuring the victim in the leg. They fled with a bag containing Rs 6 lakh and the victim’s two-wheeler.

The accused later regrouped at Shaheen Nagar, Chandrayangutta, counted the looted cash in the presence of Mohd Matlub, and subsequently dispersed to their native places.

Acting on credible intelligence, six special teams were formed to track the accused. On February 24, police apprehended Furkhan Ahmed and Mohd Taiyyab Tyagi near Shaheen Nagar, Chandrayangutta.

Police seized one country-made pistol with 35 live rounds, two magazines, Rs 2.38 lakh in cash, and two mobile phones. Efforts are underway to arrest the remaining accused.

Taiyyab Tyagi was earlier involved in a 2023 robbery case in Muzaffarnagar under Sections 392, 411 and 120B IPC along with provisions of the Arms Act.
