Hyderabad: The Hyderabad District Consumer Commission-I has penalised Zoomcar India Private Limited for cancelling a booking unilaterally without the customer’s consent and failing to process a refund.
The commission directed the company to refund Rs 7,602 to the complainant, pay Rs 15,000 as compensation and Rs 10,000 towards litigation costs.
Booking cancelled without notice
According to the complaint, Namburi Pawan Kumar, a resident of Musheerabad, had booked a rental car through the company’s app for the period between February 17 and 22, 2025, paying Rs 7,200 in advance.
However, the company cancelled the booking on April 16 without providing any reason.
Refund not processed
Though the app indicated that the refund process had been initiated and would be credited within 7 to 9 days, the amount was not refunded. Despite sending emails, the complainant did not receive any response from the company.
‘Company’s response unsatisfactory’
When approached through consumer helplines, the company claimed that the refund had been processed and advised the complainant to check with the bank. Unsatisfied with the response, Pawan Kumar approached the consumer commission.
Commission finds deficiency in service
The commission noted that representatives of the company failed to appear during the hearings. After examining the evidence submitted by the complainant, the court found the company guilty of deficiency in service and unfair trade practices.
45 days to comply
The commission directed the company to implement the order within 45 days, including refunding the amount, paying compensation and covering legal expenses.
The total payable amount of fine was Rs 32,602.
