Hyderabad: Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar on Saturday issued a public alert after cyber fraudsters created fake Facebook accounts in his name and sent distress messages to people, claiming he was in trouble and needed money urgently.

One of his acquaintances fell for the scam and transferred Rs 20,000 to a fraudster’s account, the Commissioner said.

Impersonation tactics used to seek money

The fraudsters reportedly sent messages such as “I’m in trouble, please send money” to people connected to the fake accounts.

Sajjanar clarified that he never asks anyone for monetary help through social media and urged citizens not to trust such messages.

Verify before responding

Sajjanar advised users to avoid accepting friend requests or replying to messages from unknown accounts using his name or photo. “Always verify by calling the person directly before taking any action,” he cautioned.

Block and Report suspicious activity

Urging citizens to be proactive, he said suspicious messages, links, or video calls should be blocked and reported immediately. He stressed that quick reporting can help prevent further fraud.

Alertness key to preventing Cybercrime

“Only alertness can protect people and their hard-earned money from cyber criminals,” the Commissioner said, highlighting the growing need for cyber awareness.

Helplines for Reporting Fraud

People who fall victim to such scams have been advised to immediately contact the 1930 cybercrime helpline or file a complaint at the national cybercrime portal (cybercrime.gov.in) for prompt assistance.
