Hyderabad: Cardiac Stimulant injections misused for body building seized by drug control administration from Manikonda Jagir

Hyderabad: Drugs Control Administration (DCA) of Telangana, in collaboration with the Telangana Anti-Narcotics Bureau (TGANB), seized illegally stocked cardiac stimulant injections. These drugs are sold to gym-goers for abuse in bodybuilding.

The raid took place on January 18, 2025, at a premise located in Sivaji Nagar, Manikonda Jagir, Ranga Reddy District, belonging to Bariga Akash.

Officials confiscated 14 vials of TERMIVA Injections and 4 vials of TERMIN Injections (Mephentermine Sulphate Injections IP 30 mg/ml). These drugs were reportedly being sold to gym-goers for misuse as performance enhancers.

Intended Use of Mephentermine Sulphate

Mephentermine Sulphate Injection is a cardiac stimulant prescribed to treat hypotension during surgical procedures involving anesthesia. Explaining its function, the DCA noted that the drug enhances cardiac output by increasing the release of noradrenaline, raising blood pressure.

ā€œIt is crucial to understand that only a qualified doctor can determine the appropriate dosage and duration for this medication. Misuse can lead to severe health complications,ā€ a statement stated.

Health Risks and Misuse in Bodybuilding

The stimulant is being exploited for its endurance-boosting properties by bodybuilders, often sold illegally in gyms. The abuse of Mephentermine Sulphate Injections can result in severe side effects, including psychosis, cardiovascular disorders, and dependency.

Raid Details and Legal Implications

The operation was conducted by Drugs Inspectors D. Swetha Bindu (Gandipet), K. Anvesh (Shabad), and G. Ravi Kiran (Rajendranagar). Speaking on the matter, the DCA emphasized the legal ramifications:

ā€œThe illegal stocking and sale of such drugs violate the Drugs and Cosmetics Act. Offenders can face imprisonment for up to five years,ā€ officials stated.

Public Urged to Report Illegal Activities

The Drugs Control Administration has urged the public to report any suspected illegal activities related to drugs, including manufacturing or sales in residential, commercial, or industrial areas. Complaints can be registered on their toll-free number, 1800-599-6969, operational from 10:30 am to 5:00 pm on working days.
