Hyderabad: Police have arrested a US return techie for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and dragging a traffic cop on the bonnet of his speeding Mercedes car at Gachibowli on Saturday.
Identified as Gurrampati Tarun, the 24-year-old youth returned recently from the United States after completing his MS degree. He was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and creating chaos on the roads in Gachibowli on Saturday.
A video of the incident went viral on Sunday. The accused was remanded to 14 days in judicial custody after a traffic constable was dragged on the bonnet of his speeding car for nearly 800 metres.
Birthday party turns reckless
Gachibowli Inspector Balaraju said that Tarun, a resident of a gated community in Narsingi, had been celebrating his birthday with friends from Friday night into the early hours of Saturday.
Despite being heavily intoxicated, he left home around 10.30 a.m. on Saturday in his Mercedes-Benz car, heading towards Kukatpally.
Series of collisions
On the way, Tarun allegedly rammed into a car at Nanakramguda but did not stop. He then hit a two-wheeler and sped towards Gachibowli via the Outer Ring Road (ORR). The victims alerted the police, prompting immediate action.

Constable dragged on bonnet
At the IIIT Junction, free left, Traffic Constable Narsimhaulu attempted to stop the vehicle. However, Tarun reportedly accelerated, causing the constable to fall onto the car’s bonnet.
Instead of stopping, the accused continued driving for nearly 800 metres up to the Gopichand Academy stretch before taking a U-turn.
Alert motorists blocked the road with their vehicles, forcing Tarun to halt. Gachibowli police arrived at the scene and took him into custody.
High alcohol levels, Judicial remand
A breath analyser test revealed an alcohol level of 160 mg/100 ml, well above the permissible limit. Based on complaints from the victims, police registered a case against Tarun and produced him before the court.
The court remanded him to 14 days in judicial custody, and he was shifted to Kandi Jail in Sangareddy district on Sunday.
Police also stated that Tarun’s father had passed away earlier, and his mother is a doctor. Further investigation is underway.
