Hyderabad fire safety crackdown: 70 buildings inspected inside ORR after fatal accidents

Hyderabad: Following a series of major and fatal fire accidents within the Outer Ring Road (ORR) limits, the Telangana Fire Department launched a series of intensive fire safety inspections, with a special focus on life-threatening violations.

So far, fire officials have inspected 70 establishments of various categories within the ORR jurisdiction.

Inspections since January 28

The inspection drive commenced on January 28 and has so far covered 70 establishments across multiple categories within the ORR limits.

These include 26 commercial establishments and 27 mercantile units, followed by three institutional buildings and three mixed-occupancy structures.

Two hospitals and two business establishments were also inspected, along with three assembly buildings. In addition, fire officials checked one residential building, one industrial unit, one multiplex and one mall as part of the ongoing enforcement drive.

Safety of occupants as priority

Director General Vikram Singh Mann has instructed officials of the Telangana Fire, Disaster Response, Emergency and Civil Defence Department to conduct rigorous inspections to prevent fire hazards and ensure the safety of occupants.

Key violations under scanner

The inspections are primarily targeting serious fire and life safety violations that pose immediate danger to inmates, including:

- Use of cellars for purposes other than parking, such as storage or accommodation for servants and watchmen

- Blocking of staircases, ramps and emergency exits

- Storage of excessive quantities of materials beyond permissible limits

Officials have been directed to take strict action against management wherever violations are found.

Emphasis on fire safety compliance

Building owners and building managements have been asked to strictly adhere to fire safety norms, ensure compliance with fire codes and maintain proper functioning of fire safety systems such as extinguishers, sprinklers and alarms.

Awareness along with enforcement

Along with inspections, fire officials are educating owners, tenants and employees on essential fire safety precautions. The department has appealed to all stakeholders to strictly follow prescribed guidelines and norms to prevent accidents and safeguard lives.
