Hyderabad: Fresh rains disrupt traffic; IMD forecasts more in next 5 days

Hyderabad: Moderate to heavy rain continued in Hyderabad on Thursday, slowing traffic and prompting advisories from the police and administration.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more rainfall over the next five days, with several districts of Telangana also likely to receive thunderstorms.

Traffic Disruptions Reported

The city police issued advisories urging commuters to allow extra travel time and use alternate routes. A tree was uprooted on Masab Tank Road, leading to a traffic slowdown until authorities cleared the obstruction.

Slow movement of vehicles was also reported on both sides of the IKEA underbridge. Police teams were deployed to regulate traffic and ease congestion.

Rainfall Predictions for Hyderabad

Independent weather tracker T. Balaji forecast that areas including Hayathnagar, Vanasthalipuram, Kuntloor, LB Nagar, Nagole, Boduppal, Nacharam, Mallapur, Kapra, Moula Ali, ECIL, and Nagaram could receive up to 100 mm of rainfall.

The IMD Hyderabad had earlier placed the city under a yellow alert, warning of moderate to heavy rain or thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds on September 11 and 12.

IMD meteorologist K.S. Sridhar, speaking to NewsMeter, said, “Moisture from the Bay of Bengal, coupled with prevailing monsoon winds, is driving the current spell. Moderate to heavy rain is likely to continue in Hyderabad and surrounding areas for the next two to three days, with intensity peaking in some eastern and northern parts of the city.”

Impact Across Telangana

The rainfall system is also affecting other parts of Telangana. According to the IMD:

• Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Jangaon, and parts of Rangareddy and Siddipet are likely to see thunderstorms.

• Adilabad, Asifabad, Mancherial, Sircilla, Suryapet, Mahabubabad, and Khammam are expected to receive scattered thunderstorms in the coming hours.

“Thunderstorm activity will remain widespread across Telangana till at least September 15. Rainfall will vary in intensity, but localized heavy downpours are expected in several districts.” Sridhar added.

Government Response

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy directed the administration to remain on high alert. He instructed officials to evacuate residents from dilapidated or old houses to safer areas to prevent mishaps.

The Chief Minister also called for coordinated rescue and relief efforts involving HYDRAA, GHMC, SDRF, Fire, Traffic, and Police departments to ensure public safety.

The Irrigation Department has been asked to monitor inflows into reservoirs, causeways, culverts, rivulets, and streams, and to take precautionary measures at flood-prone water bodies.

Forecast for Coming Days

The IMD has issued a five-day alert for Hyderabad and the surrounding districts. The forecast includes:

September 12–13: Moderate to heavy rainfall with isolated thunderstorms.

September 14–15: Widespread moderate rain, with a few districts likely to receive heavy showers.

September 16: Rainfall activity may reduce, but light to moderate showers will continue.

Residents have been advised to follow official updates, avoid waterlogged routes, and take necessary precautions during heavy spells.
