Hyderabad: With the monsoon season approaching, the Hyderabad Police and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) have launched a coordinated action plan to prevent disruptions and ensure public safety across the city.
A high-level review meeting, chaired by Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar and GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan at the Old Police Commissionerate in Basheerbagh on Thursday, outlined a series of pre-emptive measures to tackle waterlogging, traffic congestion and civic hazards.
Focus on curbing flood issues
Officials directed that desilting of drainage systems and repair of pipelines be taken up immediately, without waiting for the onset of rains.
The focus will be on early intervention to minimise flood-related disruptions in vulnerable areas.
Focus on waterlogging hotspots
Authorities identified the city’s top 10 waterlogging-prone locations and instructed field teams to begin work on permanent solutions. Special attention will also be given to securing open manholes to eliminate risks to pedestrians and motorists.
Pedestrian safety, encroachment removal
A comprehensive plan will be implemented to clear encroachments from footpaths, improving accessibility for pedestrians.
Officials also stressed the need to ensure the proper functioning of streetlights and the installation of new ones wherever required.
Road safety, traffic management
Engineering defects on roads will be rectified to prevent accidents.
Measures will also be taken to ease traffic congestion, particularly near ongoing flyover and underpass construction sites.
Rs 150 crore budget for traffic improvements
GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan said that preventing loss of life and property during the monsoon remains a top priority.
He announced that Rs 25 crore per zone, totalling Rs 150 crore, has been allocated exclusively for traffic-related infrastructure improvements, including road maintenance and urban upgrades.
Inter-departmental coordination is crucial, says Sajjanar
Police Commissioner Sajjanar emphasised that such convergence meetings help resolve ground-level issues efficiently. He emphasised prioritising traffic regulation and pedestrian safety during the monsoon season.
