Only a few members raised cursory queries regarding minor discrepancies in statistical figures

Hyderabad: Standing Committee of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has approved the Rs 11,460-crore draft budget for the 2026–27 financial year, even as members refrained from holding any in-depth discussion on revenue, expenditure, or surplus estimates.
The meeting was held at the GHMC headquarters under the chairmanship of Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi, with GHMC Commissioner Karnan addressing the Standing Committee.
No scrutiny of revenues or expenditure
Despite the city’s expanded limits covering 300 divisions, members did not question officials on key aspects such as income from the erstwhile GHMC, expenditure commitments, revenue sources in the newly merged local bodies, or the projected surplus in the draft estimates.
Only a few members raised cursory queries regarding minor discrepancies in statistical figures. No member proposed revisions to the estimates or suggested the preparation of a fresh budget. The committee subsequently signed off on the draft, giving it formal approval.
General Body meet to take final call
GHMC officials stated that a special General Body meeting would be convened shortly to discuss the budget in detail. After securing approval in that meeting, the budget proposals will be formally communicated to the State government.
Major works among 22 resolutions approved
In addition to the budget, the Standing Committee approved 22 resolutions, including:
Rs 2.6 crore for providing basic amenities at the Vaikunthadham crematorium in Izzatnagar, Chandanagar circle.
Rs 2.65 crore for the construction of a stormwater drain from Vijaya Dairy to Universal Book Store near the ENT Hospital at Koti.
A proposal to seek government permission for the acquisition of 124 properties for widening the Sridevi Talkies Road in Chandanagar.
In-principle approval for the acquisition of 220 properties to widen the road from Miyapur X Road to Allwyn Colony X Road from 45 metres to 60 metres.
AI-based solutions for GHMC website
The committee also resolved to call for tenders to implement, operate, and maintain artificial intelligence–based solutions on the GHMC website. Service providers will be selected for three years, subject to approval from the State government.
Other key decisions taken at the meeting include:
Installation of a helmet sculpture at Tarnaka junction to promote road safety awareness.
Extension of the lease of the Hyderabad Study Circle at Domalguda for three years.
Permission to initiate action against violations at Chacha Nehru Park sports ground, where private events have allegedly been held for over three decades without payment of lease rent.
Approval for the development of a sculpture park around KBR Park.
The Standing Committee’s approval clears the way for the budget to move to the General Body, though the absence of detailed deliberations drew attention within civic circles.
