Hyderabad: Prioritizing safety in the monsoon season, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has repaired 327 dilapidated structures across the city.
According to GHMC data, 685 dilapidated structures have been identified across the city. Of which 327 have already been repaired.
For the remaining 358 structures, follow-up measures, including issuing notices, conducting structural safety assessments, and counseling property owners to vacate, are actively underway.
Comprehensive measures to safeguard lives and property
With the onset of the monsoon season and warnings of heavy rainfall, GHMC has intensified its efforts to manage risky buildings. The authorities are prioritizing the safety of occupants and surrounding communities by taking timely preventive actions against hazardous structures.
Focused review amid heavy rain alerts
GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan and Chief City Planner Srinivas Rao held a virtual meeting with Town Planning officials from all zones and circles. They reviewed the progress of action on dilapidated buildings and cellar excavations, emphasizing the need for heightened vigilance given heavy rains forecast.
Zone-wise follow-up and pendency clearance
The Commissioner highlighted that Khairatabad, Secunderabad, and Charminar zones have pending cases requiring urgent attention. Officials were instructed to expedite inspections, issue necessary notices, and ensure compliance to mitigate risks posed by weak structures.
Cellar Excavations Under Close Monitoring
In addition to dilapidated buildings, GHMC is monitoring 154 identified cellar excavation sites. So far, safety works such as retaining wall construction have been completed at 61 locations. Remaining sites are under precautionary measures, with notices issued against 52 unauthorized cellars that are slated for closure using construction and demolition waste.
Strict emergency protocols for Town Planning Staff
To maintain operational readiness during the critical monsoon period, all Town Planning officers and staff have been directed to remain available, with restrictions on leave except in emergencies. The Commissioner has stressed zero tolerance for lapses that could endanger public safety.
