Hyderabad: Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has sealed a residential house of late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa in Yousufguda over long-pending property tax arrears.
Building sealed after no response to notices
GHMC officials on Monday sealed the G+4 structure located in Srinagar Colony under Circle-38 limits of Yousufguda. The property, bearing house number 8-3-1099/A (PTIN: 1100833474), is registered in the name of Jayalalithaa.
Authorities said property tax dues have been pending since 2017. Despite issuing notices in February to individuals associated with the property, there was no response, prompting enforcement action.
Dues cross ₹82 lakh
Officials stated that the outstanding dues amount to ₹82.91 lakh after applicable rebates under the One-Time Settlement (OTS) scheme, which is valid until March 31.
The building was earlier used as a private office and was assessed under the commercial category, leading to higher tax liability.
Request for change in tax category
Jayalalithaa’s nephew, Deepak Jayakumar, a Chennai resident, had previously approached GHMC authorities seeking reclassification of the property from commercial to residential.
He argued that the building has been used for residential purposes since 2017.
However, with dues remaining unpaid and no compliance from the concerned parties, GHMC proceeded with sealing the premises.
