Hyderabad: Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has intensified its enforcement actions against private hostels in key city zones following recurring complaints of regulatory violations.

A special task force (STF) conducted surprise inspections across Ameerpet, Ashok Nagar, and Dilsukhnagar—areas known for hosting large populations of students and working professionals.

58 hostels inspected, multiple violations found

On May 23, 2025, GHMC inspected 58 hostels and identified widespread non-compliance with food safety, sanitation, fire safety, and building regulations. Of these, 30 hostels were issued notices, 5 kitchens were sealed, and penalties totaling Rs 2,45,500 were imposed under the GHMC Act, 1955.

According to GHMC officials, the inspections were conducted in response to persistent complaints about deteriorating conditions in privately operated hostels. Despite prior awareness efforts and guidance sessions, many establishments continue to ignore essential health and safety norms.

Common violations identified

The inspections revealed a range of violations affecting the safety and hygiene of residents. Key issues observed included:

Cooking areas are located in cellars and parking spaces, against urban planning norms

Food prepared in unhygienic conditions, often in kitchens without proper ventilation

Greasy exhaust systems, unclean ceilings, and walls

Housefly infestations and uncovered dustbins within food handling areas

Lack of personal hygiene among food handlers, with no use of gloves or hairnets

Overcrowding and unsanitary toilets, including some opening directly into kitchen spaces

Water stagnation and uneven flooring lead to unsafe and unsanitary environments

Hostels operating without valid Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and trade licenses

Ongoing monitoring and enforcement

GHMC confirmed that the Special Task Force will continue unannounced inspections in other high-density localities. The civic body aims to curb unsafe practices and bring hostels into compliance with urban safety and hygiene standards.

Residents are encouraged to report violations through GHMC’s grievance redressal platforms. The Corporation reiterated its commitment to ensuring that all accommodations meet the minimum legal and health requirements mandated by the state.

Conclusion

As hostels remain a vital part of the city’s accommodation ecosystem, GHMC’s current enforcement actions are aimed at enforcing compliance and safeguarding the health of thousands who depend on these facilities.
