Hyderabad: GHMC to expand digital services; enable citizens to pay taxes through WhatsApp

Hyderabad: Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is gearing up to expand its digital services by enabling citizens to pay property tax, trade licence fees, and other payments through WhatsApp.

Officials believe this initiative will provide ease of payment to citizens while ensuring timely revenue collection for the civic body.

WhatsApp Business platform for seamless payments

According to sources, the GHMC has invited Expressions of Interest (EOI) from technology companies to implement this service. Through the WhatsApp Business platform, citizens will receive bills, receipts, and notices directly on their phones.

Payment links will be shared, enabling them to make payments instantly using UPI, debit or credit cards, net banking, or digital wallets.

Instant acknowledgement and 24x7 service

Payments made via WhatsApp will be credited to GHMC’s account within two days, with instant acknowledgements sent to payers. The platform will provide real-time analytics and payment status updates. Officials emphasised that these services should remain operational round the clock to benefit citizens.

Multiple languages for better accessibility

To cater to all sections of society, GHMC plans to offer these WhatsApp services in multiple languages, along with English, ensuring that language does not become a barrier to availing civic services.

Applications invited till July 16

Meta-affiliated tech companies, consortia, banking, and related institutions can apply to implement the project. The last date for submitting EOIs is July 16, 2025. The selection will be based on the technical capabilities, services offered, and experience of the applicants.

Initiative to boost revenue collections

Officials pointed out that GHMC collects over Rs 2,000 crore annually in property tax and nearly Rs 1,000 crore in town planning fees. With WhatsApp being widely used among citizens, the civic body is confident this initiative will improve convenience and enhance its revenue realisation efficiently, the GHMC officials said.
