Hyderabad: The State government on Saturday allotted 3.95 acres of land at Khanapur, near Kokapet Neopolis, to the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB), as part of its efforts to strengthen drinking water infrastructure in the fast-growing western corridor of Hyderabad.
The land will be used for constructing key water infrastructure facilities to meet the rising demand in Neopolis, Kokapet and surrounding Outer Ring Road (ORR) areas.
Notably, the project will enable gravity-based water supply to several parts of the city, reducing electricity costs by eliminating the need for pumping.
Rising demand in rapidly urbanising zones
With rapid population growth and high-rise vertical urbanisation in and around the ORR, particularly in Neopolis and Kokapet, drinking water demand has increased significantly.
To meet both present and future requirements, the government is implementing the Godavari Drinking Water Supply Project – Phase II & III, which includes diversion of an additional 300 MGD of water.
The project also aims to rejuvenate the Musi River and replenish Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar reservoirs with Godavari waters.
Infrastructure works already underway
Following government directives, works have commenced in the Kokapet Neopolis layout for construction of sump, pump house, section office, Ground Level Service Reservoir (GLSR), and Sewage Treatment Plant (STP).
However, the existing land available with the Water Board in Kokapet has been fully utilised, necessitating additional space for expansion.
Why additional land was needed
The Water Board already owns 8.75 acres at Khanapur. This land is sufficient only for the proposed 22.5 ML Master Balancing Reservoir (MBR), two Elevated Level Service Reservoirs (ELSRs), Chlorination room, and maintenance unit.
To fully execute the project, the Board requested allocation of adjoining HMDA-identified land 1.18 acres for Overhead Tank (OHT), 0.77 acres for HMDA site office, 2.00 acres belonging to an Ashram. Total additional land: 3.95 acres.
Recognising the strategic importance of the site, the government issued orders on Friday allocating the land to HMWSSB.
Gravity-based supply to save power costs
The Khanapur site lies at an elevation of approximately +592 metres, making it topographically suitable for gravity-based distribution. This will allow water supply without pumping to Neopolis and Kokapet areas, Bojagutta Reservoir, Old City, Shaikpet, Red Hills, and Mehdipatnam.
By enabling gravity flow, the project is expected to significantly reduce electricity consumption and recurring pumping charges.
Boost to future water security
The allocation is aimed at strengthening long-term drinking water security for Hyderabad’s expanding western and central zones.
Officials said the infrastructure will not only meet the growing demand in high-density urban clusters but also optimise operational costs through energy-efficient distribution.
With rapid urban expansion around Neopolis and Kokapet, the project is expected to play a crucial role in sustaining the city’s future water needs, the officials said.
