Hyderabad: A vague headache and decreased vision in both eyes turned out to be a case of a complex brain large anterior communicating artery (ACOM) aneurysm for 53-year-old Nemya Nayak, a farmer from Kulkacharla Mandal Parigi in Mahabubnagar.

A Hyderabad-based Hospital- Medicover, successfully carried out a rare surgery to treat the patient diagnosed with a large ACOM aneurysm in the brain, a condition that could have caused a fatal hemorrhage.

For the last year, Nayak was suffering from decreased vision in both eyes with unexplained headaches. After getting checked by an ophthalmologist, he landed at Hospitals where an ophthalmology evaluation and an MRI of the brain were done.

Dr. Ranjith G., an interventional neurologist, along with Dr. Srikanth Reddy, a neurosurgeon, diagnosed Nayak with a brain aneurysm that was pressing the optic nerve, affecting his vision. Aneurysms are thin outpouching of blood vessels that are usually berry shaped.

Dr. Ranjith said, "In his case, if the aneurysm grows, he would have been at risk of complete loss of vision and if the aneurysm ruptures, he would have sustained a fatal subarachnoid hemorrhage." This was a challenging situation for the doctors as Nayak had a history of coronary artery disease and a low ejection fraction.

With a detailed treatment plan, the doctors brought a ray of hope to the family that was losing hope after visiting many other hospitals. Nayak underwent endovascular obliteration of the aneurysm. The doctors used an advanced device called a "contour device" to stop the blood flow into the aneurysm.

A contour device is an advanced basket-like device placed inside the aneurysm that helps shrink the aneurysm. It was used for the first time in Hyderabad.
