Hyderabad: How Bathukamma Kunta revival has brought smiles to locals
Hyderabad: HYDRAA Commissioner AV Ranganath conducted field inspections of ongoing lake rejuvenation projects in a bid to speed up water body conservation efforts in Hyderabad.
He visited Bathukamma Kunta in Amberpet and Bum-Rukn-ud-Daula in the Old City. Locals hail HYDRAA's efforts in transforming neighborhood lakes.
The HYDRAA Commissioner emphasized the importance of restoring lakes not only as flood mitigation tools but also as ecological and recreational assets for the city.
Revival of Bathukamma Kunta brings joy to locals
Ranganath inspected the condition of Bathukamma Kunta, reviewing the inlet and outlet channels designed to handle rainwater inflow and overflow. He also took stock of diversion works to separate stormwater and sewage lines near the lake. The local community expressed heartfelt gratitude, calling the restoration āa breath of new lifeā for the area.
Residents pointed out returning migratory birds and waterfowl as a sign of ecological revival and requested the construction of a community hall near the lake. The Commissioner assured that their suggestion would be considered.
Warning on illegal dumping along Musi River
Addressing complaints about unauthorized soil dumping along the Musi riverbed under HYDRAAās name, the Commissioner clarified that those responsible had been warned and ordered to remove the debris within a week. He added that failure to comply would result in legal action and formal cases against the violators.
Bum-Rukn-ud-Daula lake to be restored to its full extent
Ranganath also visited Bum-Rukn-ud-Daula in the Old City. Originally spanning 18 acres, the lake had seen nearly half its area encroached and filled with debris. HYDRAA is now actively working to restore the lake to its original size by removing the accumulated soil and reclaiming the lost space.
The Commissioner examined the existing outlets and discussed improvement plans to ensure proper drainage and lake maintenance. Locals celebrated the progress, calling the lake a ājewel of the Old Cityā and a source of civic pride.
Plans for public parks and walking paths
As part of the rejuvenation efforts, HYDRAA is also developing walking tracks, childrenās play areas, and green spaces around the lakes. Commissioner Ranganath shared that the intention is not only to conserve water bodies but to create vibrant public spaces for the community.
Residents recalled how the area once struggled with foul odors, stagnant sewage, and mosquito infestations. āToday, the environment feels fresh and inviting,ā they said. āWeāre thankful to HYDRAA for protecting the lakes and giving our community a new identity.ā
