Hyderabad: A 41-year-old man from Secunderabad lost more than Rs 12.75 lakh after cyber fraudsters allegedly hacked into his HDFC Bank account using a malicious mobile application.
The incident came to light after the victim noticed suspicious online activity and alerted his bank.
OTPs, fake calls raise alarm
On August 25, the victim began receiving multiple OTPs, WhatsApp alerts, and calls from people posing as HDFC Bank officials. They claimed that a new beneficiary was being added to his account. Alarmed, he approached his local HDFC branch executive and requested precautionary action.
Loan credited, money siphoned off
The next day, fraudsters compromised his net banking access through a malicious Android Package Kit (APK) file unknowingly installed on his phone. They first added an unauthorised payee, then credited a loan of Rs 12,75,204 into his account without his consent.
The amount, along with his existing savings of Rs 1.8 lakh, was siphoned off through multiple transactions, four debits of Rs 1.8 lakh each and another of Rs 98,000.
Victim denies responsibility
The victim clarified that he had never applied for or authorised any loan, and held no liability for the fraudulent credit or subsequent debits made from his account.
Police probe underway
Following his complaint, the Cyber Crime Wing of Hyderabad Police registered a case and launched an investigation into the fraud.
