Hyderabad: During an ongoing investigation into drug abuse in Greater Hyderabad, the sleuths of Eagle were tipped off about a local drug peddler involved in transporting drugs.

When caught, the accused was found with 2 kg of ganja. However, the cops did not know that this arrest would lead them to a bigger customer base that included medicos.

Arfath Ahmed Khan, 23, hails from Risala Bazar in Bollaram. When Arfath was caught peddling drugs, cops identified 84 consumers, including 26 medicos from Medicity Institute of Medical Sciences situated at Ghanpur-Medchal.

How did it all begin?

Arfath Ahmed Khan, who is a habitual ganja user, turned to drug peddling to fund his addiction.

He connected with one Zareena Bhanu, a Bidar-based supplier, procuring bulk ganja for local sales in Hyderabad. Between August 2024 and August 2025, he transferred substantial amounts to her UPI transactions.

Investigations indicated that Zareena was involved in drug peddling since 2010, supplying to Hyderabad residents and receiving payments via Phone PE, GPay, Paytm and cash.

She sources ganja primarily from Parli, Maharashtra, and local suppliers in Bidar. Authorities identified 51 peddlers with transactions amounting to more than Rs 20 lakhs. Bank records linked to Zareena Bhanu reveal annual transactions of Rs 1.5 crore, including Rs 6 lakhs sent by her accomplice, Arfath Ahmed Khan, for procurement.
