Hyderabad looks toward AI to solve parking issues

Hyderabad: In a bid to alleviate vehicle parking challenges in Hyderabad and other urban areas of Telangana, the State government is turning to Artificial Intelligence (AI). IT Minister D Sridhar Babu has instructed engineers in the IT department to create strategies leveraging AI to address these issues.

“Using AI, we should identify high-traffic areas and develop applications that allow people to book parking spaces in advance,” Sridhar Babu said after a presentation by a private firm at the Secretariat. He further noted the importance of consulting companies that specialise in AI solutions.

Priority for building multi-level parking structures

This initiative follows chief minister A Revanth Reddy’s directive to find effective solutions for traffic and parking problems in cities. Emphasising the potential of AI, the minister also stressed the need for multi-level parking structures to cope with limited space.

“AI offers numerous solutions for these problems. Given the space limitations, building multi-level parking lots should be prioritised,” the minister remarked.

Hyderabad has 1.4 million four-wheelers

A statement from the minister’s office highlighted the sharp increase in the use of personal vehicles. Hyderabad alone accounts for 1.4 million four-wheelers, 70,000 cabs, and 100,000 auto-rickshaws. This surge has made parking a significant challenge, particularly along roadsides and in shopping areas.

Sridhar Babu pointed out that many countries are already employing AI to solve parking issues. “We should study these international services and introduce those that meet local needs,” he added.

“This move aims to use AI technology to ease the parking problems in Hyderabad and other urban areas in Telangana, enhancing urban infrastructure and mobility,” he concluded.
