Hyderabad: A 48-year-old private employee from Hyderabad was duped of Rs 1.80 lakh after falling victim to a sophisticated credit card verification scam.
The victim received a phone call from mobile number 9937293549, with the caller claiming to be an executive from the SBI Credit Card Office. The fraudster informed the man that his credit card had not been used for a long period and that a penalty had been imposed. Offering to help waive the fine, the caller requested a brief video call to verify the card.
During the video interaction, the victim was instructed to display his credit card, including the CVV number. Although he did not share any OTPs, he soon received a message informing him that Rs. 1,80,000 had been debited from his card ā an amount far exceeding his credit limit of Rs 50,000. Alarmed, the victim immediately filed a complaint through the national cybercrime reporting portal.
Authorities suspect the scammers used screen-recording or real-time access tools during the call to capture the card details and initiate unauthorized transactions. Further investigation is on, the Cyber Crime department officials said.
