Hyderabad: Meet Dr Sohail Anjum, who enters Indian Book of World Records for unique surgery
Hyderabad: Dr Sohail Anjum, a Hyderabad-based surgeon associated with Glenfield Malla Reddy Brain and Heart Hospital on Chapel Road, has entered the Indian Book of World Records for performing what has been described as a first-of-its-kind cervical spine tumor surgery using a new anesthetic approach.
He received a special award on February 6 at a felicitation ceremony held at the hospital.
According to hospital officials, the recognition was granted for conducting a high-risk cervical spine procedure using hypobaric drugs delivered through a continuous thoracic subarachnoid block technique, which was applied in this context for the first time.
Record Recognition and Felicitation
Representatives from the Indian Book of World Records, including Dr Pavani and Dr Rubika Nanda, attended the felicitation event at Glenfield Hospital. Senior Radiologist Dr M.A. Mateen presided over the function.
Dr Azhar Ansari, Medical Director, congratulated Dr Sohail Anjum on behalf of the hospital administration. Director Mr Yunus Ansari welcomed the patient who underwent the procedure.
The Indian Book of World Records presented a citation to Dr Anjum in recognition of the surgical achievement.
High-Risk Patient Profile
Speaking at the event, Dr Sohail Anjum explained the medical challenges involved in the case.
“The patient on whom he performed the surgery was over 65 years old and was suffering from various complex diseases; he had undergone bypass surgery,” he said. “He was suffering from kidney disease, thyroid, and many other diseases.”
He noted that the patient had a cervical spine tumor that caused repeated paralysis episodes. “Due to a tumor in the neck bone, his hands and feet were repeatedly paralyzed,” Dr Anjum said.
New Technique Used for Anesthesia
Dr Anjum said conventional anesthesia posed serious risks in this case, prompting the team to adopt a different method.
“Giving him anesthesia in the traditional way was life-threatening. Therefore, he performed the surgery with a new technique that is new and unique in the world,” he said.
The surgery used hypobaric drugs administered through a continuous thoracic subarachnoid block, instead of standard anesthesia protocols typically used for such spine procedures.
International Publication
Hospital representatives said the surgical report has also been included in an American medical journal publication. Alongside this, the Indian Book of World Records formally recorded the procedure and honored Dr Anjum with an award and citation.
